Why Bishop Jones Spent a Week Traveling Our Conference
Outline of What Bishop Jones Shared
The Mississippi–West Tennessee Conference of the Global Methodist Church has committed to help fund a Global Methodist worship space in Doha, Qatar. That commitment is already in place, and the conference is now responsible for ongoing monthly payments.
The total cost of the space is $452,000. The down payment has been made, but approximately $250,000 remains. Payments are currently due, and the conference must continue making those payments.
Bishop Scott Jones stated clearly that this obligation cannot be left unfinished. Having made the commitment, he is asking the conference to help meet the remaining balance now rather than leaving that responsibility to the next bishop.
The goal is to raise as much as possible before the Annual Conference in May, where churches will have the opportunity to bring offerings to help meet these payments.
This project is not covered by the regular budget of the conference and requires additional giving.
Bishop Jones is asking churches across the conference to respond now to help meet the current payment schedule and complete what has already been committed.
He connected this work to Acts 1:8, where Jesus calls the church to be His witnesses in “Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” This project reflects that global calling.
The opportunity came through the conference’s partnership with Methodist conferences in the Philippines. Filipino Methodists working in Doha, Qatar, formed a congregation that has outgrown its current rented space.
Through that connection, the Global Methodist Church was invited to take part in a shared Protestant worship facility that has been approved by the government.
The conference committed to secure space in that building, enough for approximately 200 people to gather for worship.
This creates a permanent place for that congregation and opens the door for ministry among people from more than 170 nations who are living and working in Qatar.
Churches and individuals are encouraged to give now to help meet the remaining balance and ongoing monthly payments.
