Why Do We Gather for Charge Conference?

To be Methodist is to be part of a connection.

Paul describes the Church in 1 Corinthians 12 as one body with many parts. No congregation has the same people, gifts, or ministry as another, but we are connected and responsible to one another. That means the work of the Church is not limited to what any one congregation can do. Together, our churches can support one another and respond to needs and opportunities for mission across our communities.

Connection has been part of the life of the people called Methodists from the beginning.

Charge Conference is one way we live out that connection today. Local churches and conference leadership gather to worship, hear how churches are carrying out their ministry, approve church leadership, make decisions, and consider how churches across the district can work together in mission.

In Acts 1:8, Jesus tells his disciples that they will be his witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Our connection helps us do that together. Through Charge Conference, churches can look at the needs in their district and work together to take the gospel of Jesus Christ into their communities. Through Annual Conference, we can do the same across a larger region. Through General Conference, the connection extends around the world. At each level, the goal is to meet real needs, bear witness to Jesus Christ, make disciples, and spread scriptural holiness across the globe.
